Who We Are

Our Mission:

To build community through the healing rhythms of the drum.  Through the ancient art of drumming, we connect with ourselves and to others around us. Drumming awakens the spirit and transcends barriers of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and age.  Our ministry seeks to encourage by example and to invite service through participation.  We raise awareness of drumming cultures through our work in the congregation and larger community.

About Us:

Started in 2005, the DrUUmatics is a drum ministry of the South Nassau Unitarian Universalist Congregation (SNUUC) in Freeport, Long Island.  When requested by the minister, we accompany the choir during Sunday service at 10:30 am.

The DrUUmatics also host drum circles and related events for congregation members and the larger community.  The group performs at schools, congregations and fundraisers throughout Long Island Island.  From 2010 through 2014, The DrUUmatics collaborated with the Long Island Composers Alliance for Black History Month performances on Long Island and in Manhattan.  The group has supported the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Sounds of Silence, Relay for Life, Sandy Victims against FEMA and the One Love Yoga Festival, in addition to other non-profits.

Drum U:

When there is enough interest, the group will offer beginner workshops in West African drumming. We provide a series of 4 one and a half hour sessions for $50. Additional series will be added if the interest continues.  Funds raised go directly to the maintenance of our instruments.  Experienced and aspiring students learn ensemble drumming in a spirit of joy and community.  We have extra drums, no experience necessary.  Please check the Drum U link to see if these classes are scheduled.  For more information call 516-623-1204.
